Chisholm Trail Winery by Sam Thacker

It has been a couple of years since I toured this winery. I really liked the owner(s) and have become a fan of their various red wines since. It is on the other side of Fredricksburg than the other wineries in the area but the drive off of the main highway is pretty and the wines are worth tasting (or buying).

I sought out this winery because of the location: the former weekend getaway of the Master of Suspense, director Alfred Hitchcock (Psycho, The Birds, North by Northwest). Hitch chose this site around 1940 for many reasons, proximity to San Francisco, close to the ocean, privacy and seclusion, and that it was ideal for growing wine grapes, and had vines that had been in production since the 1880s. Over the next three decades, Hitch entertained the Hollywood royalty of the day here, including Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly, and many more. As the Hitchcocks aged and were able to travel less, by the mid-70s, they stayed only in their Belaire home, and this property fell into disrepair, including the old vines. By the time the property came into the hands of the Brassfield family, they needed to be completely replanted. The Brassfields did replant, all in Pinot Noir, with several different clones. They started commercial production of their wine in about 2005, and have built a loyal, dedicated following for their hand-crafted estate Pinot Noir blends and single-clone varietals. The wines have done well in competitions and earned high scores from critics. The Brassfields' hospitality at members-only functions and Santa Cruz Mountain "Passport Weekends" (the only time they are open to the public) has also gone a long way in turning casual Pinot Noir drinkers into enthusiasts and members of their extended wine family. Yes, I sought out the winery for the opportunity to tour the old Hitchcock estate. I joined the wine club to continue my enjoyment of some of the finest Pinot Noir to come from California, and to guarantee my continued supply.
Texas Hills Vineyard & Winery by Mae

I was never much of a red wine fan until I had the Texas Hills Barbera 2010- from first sip, I was completely in love! The Barbera opened me up to other reds and I also fell in love with the Kick Butt Cabs they have at Texas Hills, in fact, I’m thinking of serving them at my wedding. Texas Hills is an amazing Texas winery that serves amazing Texas wines. You have to try them!
